Weekly tuition will see the fastest improvements, although other arrangments can be made if this isn't possible for you.
Obviously the more you practise the better you'll become, but you needn't do marathon sessions. Far more important is the frequency of your practise. Skills will develop faster if you practise a little every day. This will be different for everyone but even 15 minutes a day can get good results.
This isn't an uncommon practise and over the years I've found that students feel far more committed to learning this way. In particular some students may feel like giving up after one or two lessons, but by the fourth there has usually been some encouraging progress.
Personally I believe you should start as you intend to continue. For example, If electric is you aim, then start out with one. These days good guitars of all types can be very affordable. If you're in any doubt what to buy feel free to contact me and I'd be happy to advise you.
I have taught children as young as 6 with mixed results. For some it really is just "play-time" while others have responded quite well. Any hands on experience with music is excellent for a child's development.
